Alcohol Statistics:

Teenagers whose parents talk to them regularly about the dangers of drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those whose parents don't, yet only 1 in 4 teens reports having these conversations.

Alcohol kills 6.5 times more youth than all other illicit drugs combined.

65% of the youth who drink alcohol report that they get the alcohol they drink from family and friends.

Underage drinking costs the U.S. more than $58 billion every year-- enough to buy every public school student a state-of-the-art computer.

50% of high school seniors report drinking alcohol in the past 30 days with 32% report being drunk at least once in the same period.

More than 40% of teens who admitted drinking said they drink when they are upset; 31% said they drink alone; 25% said they drink when they are bored; and 25% said they drink to "get high."

Three out of every four students (75%) have consumed alcohol (more than just a few sips) by the end of high school.

Young adults aged 18-22 enrolled full-time in college were more likely than their peers not enrolled full time to use alcohol in the past month, to binge drink, and to drink heavily.

Every day, on average, 11,318 American youth (12 to 20 years of age) try alcohol for the first time, compared with 6,488 for marijuana; 2,786 for cocaine; and 386 for heroin.

Young people who begin drinking before age 15 are four times more likely to develop alcoholism than those who begin drinking at 21.

Teens under 15 who have ever consumed alcohol are twice as likely to have sex as those who have not. Nearly 4 in 10 (39%) sexually active teens who use alcohol have had sexual intercourse with four or more individuals.

Adolescents drink less and have fewer alcohol-related problems when their parents discipline them consistently and set clear expectations.
